What would you do in case of dental emergencies such as a broken tooth or injured soft tissues causing severe bleeding? Most patients would not know what exactly to do in such situations as they may tend to panic. The more you delay the treatment, the more complicated it could get. Here are some of the common dental emergencies and how you can get them treated.

Broken tooth

A broken tooth could be the result of severe external trauma, such as a bad fall, sports-related injuries, etc. Since the dental pulp within the tooth will be disturbed during the injury, it can lead to severe pain and bleeding. Hence, use a clean piece of gauze to apply pressure on the wound. This helps to reduce bleeding and facilitates the formation of a clot. You may place a cold pack or a damp washcloth on the cheek to reduce the swelling while you rush to a dentist as soon as possible.

Injured soft tissues

A bitten lip, tongue, or bruised inner lining of the mouth can lead to severe bleeding and pain. Rinse the mouth with clean water to get rid of the blood and any foreign particles that could be in the mouth. Use a piece of gauze to cover the injured area and control the bleeding. The dentist may have to stitch the wound if it is too deep. If it isn't, the wound will be treated, and suitable medication will be prescribed to reduce pain and prevent infection.

Avulsed tooth

An avulsed tooth is one that has been completely uprooted from its socket in the mouth. If you manage to find the tooth, pick it up by holding the crown and not the root as the microbes in your hand can infect it. Rush to a dentist as soon as possible with the tooth placed in a glass of milk. If you reach the dentist's practice within an hour of the incident, the tooth may be placed back in the socket, and the tissues could regrow around it.
